Prelle is the custodian of a Fabric Archive started with the designs of Pierre Toussaint de Chazelles born in 1752 and has enriched this Archive with infusions of designs, gathered by the company for generations. Today the archives of Prelle consist of tens of thousands of documents; these documents are divided into 2 principal groups :
• samples of all the production made by Prelle since its origins has been conserved in our Pattern Books since 1837 as well as the technical documents necessary for reweaving the fabrics (technical and color formulas) saved since 1866.
We also conserve the "tableaux tisses", drawings, Jacquard Cards, embroideries, costumes, and religious ornaments...
• the textile documents come from many sources (France, Italy, Japan, China, Spain, Persia...) these date from the 14th century to the present and encompass many uses (religious ornaments, clothing, and furniture fabrics). These documents are the source of inspiration for new projects.
The library is constantly built on with the new documents bought at auction.
Only part of these documents are today inventoried, sorted and photographed. However these past years we have collected patterns in order to create 5 period books : Renaissance, 18th century, Empire, 19th century, Years 1900-1950.
