Velours ciselé polychrome for Biltmore Estate, North Carolina

June 12, 2008, Newport, RI

The Preservation Society of Newport County recently presented the "Lauren Award for Artisanship" to Prelle et Cie, Guillaume Verzier, in recognition of Prelle's role in supplying much of Newport's rich textile heritage, and in gratitude to the Verzier family for their preservation of this savoir faire.

The award was presented by Chairman Pierre DuPont Irving, and Vice President Paul L Szápáry at Rosecliff, one of 11 residencies restored by the Preservation Society of Newport County.

The prize dedicates works of "retissage" since 1988 by Prelle Manufacture for different Mansions, and in particular to the re-weaving on handlooms of the sumptuous chiseled velvet for the Ballroom of Marble House.

featuring at the Paris show-room: Joséphine or the passion for flowers and fine textiles. (In partnership with the Museum of Textiles in Lyon.)

Joséphine reigned over style and taste. This exhibit includes several sumptuous, woven, embroidered and sequin encrusted dress borders. Also on display are a number of exceptional wall-hangings and borders that demonstrate Joséphine's passion for flowers and botany.

Autumn Hues

Our own Catherine Torgue wove this broché on black satin in 2007 for the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition. Catherine has been working on Prelle's hand-looms for the past 23 years. For the competition she selected a composition that was originally designed by Aimé Prelle taken from a tempera by François Vernay in 1889. It took as many as fifteen different hues to weave the fruit motif.
